How Covid Can Take a Toll on Teeth

September 27, 2021

The coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt everyone’s life in innumerable ways. One of the most prominent symptoms—beyond the virus itself, of course—has been emotional stress. Dental professionals have seen a significant rise in their patients using grinding or clenching their teeth as a coping mechanism. It is called bruxism, and people can do it when they’re awake or asleep. And unfortunately, bruxism can result in teeth that are painful, cracked, broken or chipped. That’s when you need an endodontist.

At the office of Concho Valley Endodontics, we utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to plan and perform all procedures with the utmost precision. We know that every patient is unique and, depending on the condition and complexities particular to your tooth, we may use a variety of high-precision tools in tandem with a surgical operating microscope to gently and safely perform your treatment.

Here are some facts about bruxism.

A cracked tooth makes itself known in a variety of ways. They include severe random pain while you’re chewing, or intense discomfort when it’s exposed to hot and cold beverages and food.

A chipped tooth is a common result. Most chips can be repaired by reaffixing the chip or by replacing the chip with a bonded tooth-colored filling. Some chips are substantial enough to warrant covering the tooth with a crown.

If grinding and clenching your teeth is one of your outlets for anxiety, there’s no guarantee that you won’t suffer from a crack or chip. You can, however, lessen your chance by not eating things that are tough to chew, such as nuts, ice, corn on the cob, bagels, pizza crust, and candy that’s hard and sticky. And definitely don’t bite your nails, or chew on pens and pencils.

If you know or suspect that you’re a nighttime grinder/clencher, you can lessen the damage by wearing protective gear such as a store-bought sports mouth guard or one made by a dental professional and tailored to your mouth.
