Improve Your Visits By Knowing the “Lingo”

April 25, 2022

Visits to an endodontist can sometimes be a bit confusing due to the field’s many aspects and details in the varieties of treatments. Each patient must understand all of his (or her) endodontist’s explanations and instructions. Any misunderstandings could result in unfavorable outcomes.

The office of Concho Valley Endodontics is committed to providing all of our patients with excellent attention and care. During your initial appointment, you will tell us what you want us to accomplish. We’ll then evaluate your situation, answer all of your questions, and explain your options clearly and concisely.

Here are explanations for five common terms.

Root canal therapy: It eliminates bacteria from a tooth’s infected root canals, which saves the tooth and prevents reinfection. The tooth’s inflamed pulp is removed, and the interior is cleaned, disinfected, filled and sealed.

Gum disease: Also called periodontitis, it’s a chronic infection of the gums due to the formation of plaque (a sticky film that coats teeth and contains bacteria). Gingivitisperiodontitis and advanced periodontitis are the three stages of gum disease, which, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Many people aren’t aware that they have gum disease.

Endodontic retreatment. It’s performed after previous root canal therapy wasn’t successful. Continued bacterial infection in the root canal or coronal leakage (oral debris and bacteria in a patient’s mouth penetrate and re-contaminate the root canals). The endodontist re-opens the tooth to seek out previously detected canals or a new infection, and redoes the root canal therapy.

Dental implant. It’s an artificial replacement for an absent tooth. A permanent metal post is anchored into the jawbone. A crown is put on the post. The implant acts as a natural tooth. Implants can anchor one or more teeth.

Core buildup. It uses a restorative substance that will fill in for any missing tooth structure. The substance will protect the integrity of the tooth and support the crown that will be placed on the tooth.
