Advancements in technology, training and materials have led to vast improvements in all corners of health care, and the specialty practiced by our endodontist at Concho Valley Endodontics is no exception. We are able to provide optimal tooth-saving pain relief more quickly and with far less discomfort than in years past. And while modern advances touch nearly every corner of our work, one aspect has stood the test of time.
The root canal procedure that is central to our practice involves removing the tooth’s sensitive, possibly infected tissue known as the pulp. That’s where the pain you’re experiencing is coming from. Once the pulp’s been removed, we clean out and disinfect those canals and fill them with a protective material called gutta-percha before sealing them.
Gutta-percha is a safe, plastic substance that comes from a Malaysian species called the percha tree, and it has stood the “test of time” since its mid-19th century introduction, according to the American Association of Endodontists.
This resilient substance has been used in golf balls, to protect the hulls of boats, insulating underwater cables, cork manufacturing, and surgical instruments, according to the AAE.
When we’re in pain, the only fact we’re concerned with is how to make it stop. But having a painful tooth extracted may not be the best approach. What if that pain could disappear without having to sacrifice that precious natural tooth? That’s what endodontic care is all about. And although learning about the somewhat obscure substance named gutta-percha might not be foremost in your mind when you’re experiencing throbbing pain, rest assured that it’s a useful part of our mission to deliver long-lasting relief.
If you are experiencing pain or sensitivity in one or more teeth that isn’t going away, our specialty at Concho Valley Endodontics has stood the “test of time” when it comes to delivering tooth-saving relief. Please contact us today for an appointment!
