Endodontic Treatment Saves Teeth

November 29, 2023

If one of your teeth needs a root canal procedure, you’re in good company. More than 15 million teeth are preserved each year with this care from an endodontist. A root canal treatment is needed when a tooth’s pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to repeated dental procedures, physical trauma, deep decay, a damaged crown, or a chip or crack. Left unattended, an inflamed or infected pulp will be painful and possibly devolve into an abscess.

The office of Concho Valley Endodontics uses state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to plan and perform this procedure with the utmost precision. We know that every patient is unique and, depending on the complexities particular to your tooth, we may use a variety of high-precision tools along with a surgical operating microscope to gently and safely perform your procedure.

The endodontist starts a root canal procedure by injecting you will enough Novocain so that you won’t feel a thing. He then takes out the pulp and uses the utmost precision to clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth. He fills and seals the tooth with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. (Fun fact: It comes from a Malaysian tree called a percha.)

When the orthodontist has completed the root canal, he covers the remaining tooth surface with a small protective nub. Your general dentist takes it from there by putting a permanent crown on the nub. And voilà! The tooth is restored and returned to its previous look and functioning.

Root canal treatments are good for at least 30 years, if not the rest of your life.
